Buyer’s Guide to Venetian Blinds

If you’re looking for window blinds that are both functional and stunning, Venetian blinds are the way to go. Custom-made Venetian blinds in particular, will be well-suited for your needs. When they’re measured and fitted perfectly, they deliver so much more than is expected of them. And for this reason, they’re widely loved and used around the world.

The exact origins of this type of blind is hard to pinpoint, however it’s thought they were one of the earliest around. Over the years, they’ve undergone many changes in style, design and of course practicality. What you have today is a sleek, unique and incredibly flexible window covering suitable for all types of homes.

So firstly, well done on considering this wonderful blind for your space. We promise you won’t be disappointed. Despite having modern traits, it also beautifully blends in with eras past, adding a sense of classic chic instantly. Their individually controlled slats offer exceptional light and privacy control, so you can navigate ambience to a ‘t’.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the key things you should know when buying Venetian blinds:

1. How To Measure For Venetian Blinds

There are two ways blinds can sit at your window; either inside, or outside the recess. In this world, we refer to this as reveal and face fit. Both have their own advantages. For instance, blinds that are fitted inside the frame are more snug and add to insulation. Outside mount blinds can make the window space look bigger than it is. So it all really depends on your wants.

Once you’ve decided where you want your blind to sit, you want to grab your tape measure and a pencil. Make sure to measure in millimetres.

Here’s how to measure for Venetian blinds, both inside and outside mounted:

OUTSIDE:

       WIDTH

  1. a) Measure the exact width you would like the blind to cover.
  2. b) Measure to the outside of the architrave or at least 50mm past the window opening.

    HEIGHT

  3. a) Measure the exact height you would like the blind to cover.
  4. b) Measure to the outside of the architrave or at least 50mm past the window opening.

NOTE: The blind will be supplied at the sizes provided (no deductions).

INSIDE:

        DEPTH

Measure the depth of the window frame to ensure you have enough space for the blind to operate.

        WIDTH

  1. a) Measure the width inside the window frame in 3 places from left to right.
  2. b) Make a note of the smallest measurement.

    HEIGHT

  3. a) Measure the height inside the window frame in 3 places from top to bottom.
  4. b) Make a note of the smallest measurement.

NOTE: We’ll make slight deductions to ensure the blind fits your window.

2. What Material Would Work Best For Venetian Blinds In Your Space?

One of the steps in the process will include choosing the right material. Typically, you’ll find Venetian blinds come in timber, timber-look (PVC) and aluminium variations.

Of course each of these suits different situations. For instance, aluminium and wood-look (PVC) are excellent in terms of durability and maintenance. Wood-look in particular is well-suited for moisture prone areas; think the kitchen and bathroom for instance. Add to the fact that they look just like their timber counterparts, and you tick off all the boxes. Timber is lovely, but it does require maintenance and can’t be exposed to water. So humid climates are definitely out of the question.

We do recommend timber-look varieties as you get everything in one. Low maintenance is music to one’s ears, and having that beautiful wood-look is another major plus. That’s also something the aluminium versions won’t really have.

3. Size Of The Slats

The next important thing to consider is the size of the slats in your Venetian blinds. Earlier we spoke about how these blinds had slats that could be individually controlled. Well, you also need to think about how big you want them to be. To help you decide, the general rule of thumb is to go for bigger slats when the window is bigger. If the window is small, then the slats too should be small. However, this isn’t set in stone. If you feel like mixing things up, go for it. You’ll find that large slats sync well with traditional settings while smaller slats feel more modern. It really is a matter of personal preference at the end of the day, and don’t be afraid to experiment.

4. Ready-Made or Custom Venetian Blinds?

Ready-made blinds or off-the-shelf blinds as they’re also known, are widely available. In fact, it’s likely you’ve got a retail store in your area selling exactly that. It’s also quite tempting to pop in and get some because it’s easier than going through measuring and installation. We certainly don’t blame you. We 21st-century humans are all about convenience and saving time, and this definitely seems like one way to do it.

The only issue with this is that for starters, there’s likely not a wide variety when it comes to choice. What you see is pretty much what you get. Then, there’s the issue of sizing. Sure you could trim your blinds if they’re too big, but if that goes wrong you’re back to square one. Some windows in your home could also be sized differently, which means a whole new search as well. And of course there’s also the question of quality. Store blinds are likely mass produced overseas, so materials are likely cheap. To make matters worse, the pricing is more than they’re worth, thanks to the middlemen that need to be paid.

So taking all these into account, custom-made blinds will save you a lot of headaches. DIY made-to-measure Venetian blinds may seem like an uphill task, but not if you take it step-by-step. Use our measuring and installation guides to help you. You can customise them as well, for your taste and vision. Plus, they’ll fit beautifully and last a long time to come as they’re made right here at home.
